Wakame seaweed is a very dark green-brown seaweed that is typically found around the waters of Japan. It is used in a similar way to Kombu seaweed. This wakame seaweed comes in the form of flakes that are handy to add to soups and other snacks for extra taste and nutrition. Be sure to soak them first, if you are adding them to a non-liquidy meal.
Wakame seaweed has a similar nutritional content to Kombu, though Kombu contains more iodine and wakame contains more magnesium. As with all seaweed, it is nutrient-rich and packed with protein, fibre and other minerals, and has few calories. Wakame, when added to food, softens the fibres of the foods and is therefore ideal for cooking with tough ingredients such as beans. This helps to aid digestion and prevent flatulence.
