In risotto or paella: Sweat chopped onions in a pan before adding the rice, together with water. Add spices (such as paprika, saffron etc) and cook for 15 minutes, continually stirring and adding water. Add the other ingredients, cover the pan and leave to simmer for 15-20 minutes.
To just cook on its own:
Add to boiling water and leave to simmer for 25 minutes or until tender.
