Pieces of Roasted Dandelion Root

  • Caffeine-free alternative to coffee.
  • Grind the root as you need it for a fresher brew.
  • Full-flavoured ingredient for hot and cold drinks.
  • Mild diuretic-maybe useful for those suffering water retention.
These roasted roots of the common Dandelion can be ground down to make a powder that can be used in the same way as ground coffee beans. The difference with dandelion is that it does not contain any caffeine. Commercially pre-prepared Dandelion Coffee is often made from an extract of Roasted Dandelion Root using a similar process to that which creates instant coffee granules. Therefore the percentage of Dandelion Root per cup is far less than if you brew from your own freshly ground root. As well as this they can also have sugars added such as Caramel, Dextrose or Glucose Syrup.
The leaves of the Dandelion can also be brewed as a herbal tea (herbal infusion) and will not have the same flavour as the roasted root. Click here for loose Dandelion Leaves.

Directions

Grind a handful of the roasted root in a coffee grinder until you achieve a loose, coarse powder that looks similar to ground coffee. Take an electric percolator, hob percolator or a Cafetiere and spoon approximately 6 tablespoons of powder to 500ml of boiling water. Allow to brew for 10 minutes or until the percolator has stopped automatically. Serve on its own or with milk and your chosen sweetener.

Dried and Roasted Whole or Cut parts of Taraxacum officinale. Together with the root or parts of the tap root cropped before blossom time.
