Spirulina is a blue-green algae that is grown in freshwater. It is very high in protein (a complete protein with all essential amino acids), as well as antioxidants, iron, folic acid, vitamins and many other minerals. In order to preserve its nutritional value, spirulina is best consumed in recipes where little or no heat is required. For example, it can be stirred into shakes and into porridge after cooking, or incorporated into flapjacks, raw brownies or raw energy balls.
