Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) is a dried botanical ingredient with a distinctive, earthy aroma and flavour. The plant grows widely across Europe, Asia, and North America, and its root has been used in herbal preparations for centuries.
This cut valerian root is most commonly brewed into herbal teas and infusions, either on its own or blended with other botanicals. Its strong, characteristic taste pairs well with milder herbs such as chamomile, lemon balm, or passionflower, and can be sweetened with honey to taste.
Directions
To make a valerian root tea, add 1-2 teaspoons of cut valerian root to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10-15 minutes, then strain before drinking. Valerian root can also be combined with other dried herbs to create custom herbal blends.
