Interesting Snacks

This is a selection some of the snack foods that we found were unexpectedly tasty and nutritious:

Clearspring Fruit Purée

This is a really excellent range of fruit puree. They are 100% fruit, with no added preservatives. Amazingly, even though they contain no preservatives, they can be stored in the cupboard without the need for refrigeration. So you can just stock up and always have them to hand.

These fruit purees make a handy healthy snack at any time of day. The best thing about them is the way that you can combine them with things, such as crispbread, muesli or toast to make a variety of interesting and imaginative snacks. For example, we often do this type of thing.

Flavours include Apple & Apricot, Apple & Blueberry, Apple & Plum, Apple & Strawberry, Apple, Apple & Cranberry, Apple & Mango, Apple & Pineapple, Pear and Pear & Banana.  More Info >

Nakd Fruit Bars

Most commercially-available snack bars contain added sugar, which acts to hold the bar together as well as making the bar sweeter. We think that this sugar is pointless, and refuse to sell such things. Instead, we sell a range of fruit bars that are made entirely, or almost entirely, out of fruit and nuts, with as little processing as possible.

The Nakd range of fruit bars are particularly notable. They are made with 100% raw natural ingredients, and no additives. It's a very "back to nature" approach which we wholeheartedly agree with.

Flavours include Gingerbread, Cocoa Loco, Banana Bread, Apple Pie and Berry Cheeky.  More Info >

Fruit Crisps

The Snapz range of fruit and vegetable crisps are not what one might expect from crisps. Firstly, they are produced using a dehydration process which, surprisingly, produces crisps through simply drying the fruit/vegetables... which means no frying and no oil. This makes for a very low-calorie snack.

Indeed, this snack is so healthy that children can eat several packets in one sitting, and it's actually good for them!

They come in a range of flavours including Apple, Apple & Cinnamon, Strawberry-flavoured Apple, Strawberry-flavoured Apple Cubes, Blackcurrant-flavoured Apple Cubes, Plain Apple Cubes, Beetroot and Carrot & Paprika.  More Info >

Bogoya Banana Strips, 125g Organic (Tropical Wholefoods)

These chewy banana strips are quite different from the normal "dried banana" that one commonly finds in breakfast cereals. Whereas the "dried banana chips" contain added sugar, these are 100% banana, and soft and chewy instead of hard. They also actually taste of banana!

These bananas are great for snacking, and are quite large strips. You may also like to try the smaller circularly-sliced chewy banana. These are also 100% banana and made by the same supplier, and likely to become your banana of choice if you ever plan to make your own muesli.  More Info >

Biosnacky

Home-grown bean-sprouts are way more leafy than the stuff you get in Chinese takeaways, and quite good for snacking on. Young plants such as these are increasingly being described as "micro-greens" by chefs, and served in posh restaurants. The good news is that you can grow them yourselves, at a fraction of the price!

The Biosnacky is a useful kit for growing bean-sprouts, that makes it easy to germinate, water and maintain the sprouts. There are a variety of ready-mixed seeds that are good for sprouting, including mung beans, alfalfa, quinoa, radish and broccoli.

Once you get the hang of this, you can venture onto other pulses including chick peas and black-eyed beans, which work well too.  More Info >

Chestnuts

Chestnuts are quite an unusual nut, being low in calories and surprisingly, relatively high in vitamin C. We recommend them as an unusual snack, and indeed sell them in snackable form. We also recommend adding them to soups and stir-fries.  More Info >

Goji Berries

Although it's very trendy to like Goji Berries at the moment, we still happen to think that they are a great snack. They are high in a diverse range of nutrients including antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and fibre. They are high in Vitamin C (even when dried).

You can eat goji berries on their own, but they also bring alive things like muesli and mixed fruit/nut combinations.  More Info >
