We love Bonfire Night! It’s a wonderful excuse to get together with family and friends, enjoy watching a bonfire burn, and see the night sky lit up with colourful fireworks – and of course, feast on some wonderful treats!

This great British tradition, which commemorates the events of 5th November 1605, when Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot were arrested while trying to blow up the House of Lords, is a wonderful time to serve filling, healthy food to loved ones, and we’ve collected some of our favourite and most suitable recipes for you to try. It’s one of the holy grails of healthy cooking for kids to be able to produce something that looks and tastes like an unhealthy fast food ‘treat’ but is actually made from comparatively healthy ingredients. Instead of the usual grim mechanically-removed, bleached, minced chicken, these delicious nuggets are formed from protein-packed tofu and chickpea flour, and flavoured with onion, garlic and all kinds of lovely spices for a wonderul savoury flavour. Finally, they’re coated in a mixture of flour and bashed-up cornflakes for an amazing crispy finish. No knives and forks required, so they’re simply ace to bring out and pass around in front of the bonfire. Great for adults too!

Our super simple speedy pizza is the perfect weeknight supper recipe. It’s really less of a recipe, more of a list of assembly instructions. Much healthier than takeaway pizza, but missing none of the glorious flavour!

The toppings suggested here are more of a guide. So add, take away, mix up all your favourite toppings to make your perfect pizza. We’ve used Biona’s wonderful Wheat Pizza bases. We also stock the Spelt bases, as well as gluten-free options by Schar. All our pizza bases are great store cupboard ingredients to have on hand!

We’ve used light brown flour to boost the fibre content and give a more nutty taste, and we’ve given it a tantalising toffee taste by using unrefined organic coconut sugar. The real genius comes with the addition of 100% pumpkin puree which boosts the amount of fibre even further while cutting down the need to use fat. It makes for a sensationally moist, moreish dessert which never lasts for more than a few minutes! This recipe can be customised to suit your tastes, perhaps by adding raisins, currants or sultanas – or how about a handful of heart-healthy, nutty chopped pecans?
