Sun Awareness Week 2023 starts on Monday 1st May, and runs until Sunday 7th May. Started by the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD), the aim of this week is to raise awareness around sun protection and cancer. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, and rates continue to rise. Sun Awareness Week provides advice on prevention as well as early detection. By teaching prevention, BAD aims to raise awareness of the dangers of burning and excessive tanning, and to discourage people from using sun beds. They also teach people how to spot the signs of skin cancer, thereby increasing the number of people diagnosed early.
There are lots of ways to protect our bodies from sun damage. Protective clothing and eyewear is a great way to ensure you don’t suffer ill effects. Limit your sun time, especially between 10am and 4pm. Say no to tanning beds – safe tanning beds simply don’t exist! Instead they expose you to intense UV radiation, which increases your risk of skin cancer and skin damage.
Suncream and aftersun is all really important in protecting your skin against harmful damage. No single sun protection method, including suncream, can offer 100 per cent protection against harmful UV rays.
