Harvested from the bay laurel tree, bay leaves are a fragrant herb used in cooking and can also be used in herbal remedies. The leaves have a flowery and aromatic smell similar to thyme and oregano. Bay leaves are also high in vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium.
Bay leaves are often used in Indian, Greek, French, European and Caribbean cuisine. The leaves are often added to slow-cooked dishes such as soups, sauces and stews.
It is thought that bay leaves may help lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes.
