A pomander is a ball made up of flowers, fruits and/or spices which release a pleasant aroma.
Traditionally at Christmas, the Orange and Clove Pomander is made. This can be added to a mulled wine recipe, or hung and dried to be used at a later date to decorate and fragrance rooms, cupboards and draws.
Making a Pomander
This pomander has been made for decoration. Simply wrap a ribbon around a large orange or apple and tie up with a bow. If you want to keep the ribbon in place, you may find securing it with a few dressing pins would be helpful.
Using a knife point, make a small cut on the fruits surface. This will make pushing in the clove much easier. Stud the surface of the fruit with cloves. You can then store it by wrapping it in tin foil and keeping it in a cool dark place for a few weeks. The pomander will dry out and the fragrance of the fruit and spices will become stronger.
