Flax seeds are commonly used as a dietary supplement. Simply sprinkle flax seeds into breakfast cereal or yoghurts, or bake into biscuits, breads or cakes.
Flax seeds form a naturally thick porridge when mixed with water or milk. You can use them as an alternative to oats, or mix them together with oats to make a tasty breakfast porridge. Cook in the usual way for 5-10 minutes for ideal results.
Grind flax seeds using a blender and use to thicken milkshakes and smoothies.
Make flax-seed crackers. Add just enough water to soak the flax seeds before spooning thinly onto a tray. Dry in an oven. The flax-seeds will naturally stick together into crackers, which have a savoury taste and work well with tomatoes, cheese, houmous or other toppings. For extra interest, add chopped tomatoes and herbs to the flax-seed mix before drying.
Flax-seed flapjacks are a thicker version of the above recipe. Soak the flaxseeds and add a little honey or syrup together with raisins, dried cherries and chopped nuts. Spoon thickly onto a baking tray and cook until golden brown.
