Is processed meat bad for you?

There has been a lot in the news recently about processed meat, the latest article claiming that a sausage a day will make you 42% more likely to contract heart disease. Nobody quite knows why this is, but it's the latest in a line of stories about processed meat, including the famous ham sandwiches cause cancer article. It's enough to make you choke on your sunday fry-up!

Although we at Healthy Supplies emphasise the importance of healthy eating, we believe that scare stories can be a little unhelpful. Instead, we recommend a healthy, balanced diet drawn from a wide range of nutrients. It's certainly true that our protein intake is perhaps a little too meat-oriented in many cases, and that we would do well to alternate with non-meat alternatives such as pulses and soya. However, we don't recommend that people give up their guilty pleasures altogether. A diet based on denial is not sustainable in the long term. We advocate a positive appreciation of healthy food, rather than a grudging, suffering sacrifice of all traditional favourites.

Seaweed and weight loss

New research has indicated that seaweed can help tackle obesity. The article describes how a team of researchers at Newcastle University have discovered that alginate - a fibrous substance found within some types of seaweed - can help to stop the gut from digesting fat. The article goes on to describe how the alginate can be extracted, and added to other products such as bread.

At Healthy Supplies, we welcome this research, but wonder why the scientists didn't just recommend eating seaweed. It is delicious! You can buy seaweed from us - the ones to go for for maximum alginate content are wakame seaweed and kombu seaweed.  More Info >

Prion evolution

I am quite excited about this article about how prions adapt. I have long believed that there is more to evolution than just genes, and this research suggests that proteins alone can transfer non-genetic adaptations from one generation to the next. Protein folds are incredibly complex, and can be considered a "code" in themselves, alongside the genome. Perhaps the "foldeome"?

All in all, it shows that there still more to learn than we can ever imagine. Let's hope that this presents an avenue for further development.

Gut Microbiome

An article appeared in the Daily Mail today claiming that one day, yoghurt drinks could beat bugs that pile the weight on (12 November, 2009). It describes how a team from Washington University, Missouri, took microbes from the guts of fat mice and introduced them into skinny mice, and that this made the skinny mice look fat.

Some of this looks plausible. We are completely reliant on the bacteria in our digestive system, and it's likely that changes in the "microbiome" can lead to significant changes in health. This could, in theory, pave the way towards bacteria-based treatments for food-related conditions such as obesity or food intolerance. It's a bit of a quantum leap, but still within the realms of believability.

However, no sources or citations were given for any of this research, and there are no other reports of this story, so at this stage it's hard to know whether the story is true at all.

Useless Treatments

An interesting article about useless celebrity-inspired health therapies. It's argued that a number of trendy treatments are also completely useless.

Of course we broadly agree with most of this, although we believe that aromatherapy is unfairly included. Whatever one thinks of aromatherapy, there is no disputing the feeling of calm and wellbeing that comes with the use of essential oils.

Healthy Halloween Treats

We will forgive the article Give your kids a healthy halloween because we found it quite amusing! They make the point that rather than lecturing kids about eating healthily, it's good to inspire them and make good food fun. The site in question is here.

Turmeric 'kills cancer cells'

An interesting article has appeared on the BBC news website describing research showing that turmeric can kill cancer cells. Turmeric is often added to curries and gives curry powder its bright yellow colour. Though it's wise to be cautious about the results of such research, it does appear to be another demonstration of the hidden power of plants.

How they make food

An interesting article here about how they make food, that accompanied an enjoyable TV programme. I didn't realise that they put iron filings in cornflakes!

Useless Copper Bracelets

Research has shown that copper bracelets do not work. This is no surprise to us and we wholeheartedly agree with the research. We have never sold this type of thing at Healthy Supplies. Their use is not supported by sufficient clinical evidence, and we feel that to sell them would just be taking advantage of the elderly.

Violence blamed on sweets

An article titled Daily sweets 'linked to violence' appeared on the BBC News Website . Whilst we at Healthy Supplies are always wary of scare stories that appear in the news, this is nonetheless an interesting article, and has some points worth debating. Of course, whilst we at Healthy Supplies would not go far as to say that sweets necessarily make kids violent, we would say that quality fruit bars and other healthy snacks are a far better way of rewarding children, and get them into good habits for later in life.
